Composed by Jiyeon Kim for the Intercultural Composition Concert at the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, on July 3rd, 2018 in the Aasen-Hull Hall.
This concert featured artists of Sinakhoe (Society for New Korean Music) and the Oregon Wind Quintet (including Molly Barth, Wonkak Kim, & Steve Vacchi) in a collaboration of traditional Korean instruments and Western classical ensembles.
A pansori vocalist tells a story through dramatic gestures and emotive song. "Chunhyang's Song" presents a narrative while offering the haegeum improvisational space, and requires the instrumentalists to sing phrases in Korean. You also will hear shouts from the players and audience as they give their approval for a vital participatory element to a pansori performance.
