about

{ World Premiere }

Composed by Michael Fleming for the Intercultural Composition Concert at the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, on July 3rd, 2018 in the Aasen-Hull Hall.

This concert featured artists of Sinakhoe (Society for New Korean Music) and the Oregon Wind Quintet (including Molly Barth, Wonkak Kim, & Steve Vacchi) in a collaboration of traditional Korean instruments and Western classical ensembles.

The unique timbre of the haegeum and textural variety in vibrato treatments illuminate the imagery of an irradescent dragonfly in its delicate flight. "Wings of Sapphire" includes an expressive improvisational section in which the instrumentalists take melodic gestures and freely intertwine them after each player enters the sound space.
